The Reasons Why...

At the start of 2010, I had just finished school and was working part time in hair salon. Being outside of a learning environment and not working towards my own professional goals, I began to feel restless. At the least, I was reading a book a week, all non fiction girly novels. I needed more. So one day while wondering the SF public library I came across the Autism section. I checked out Jenny McCarthy's Louder Than Words. This is incredibly cheesy, but my life was forever changed. I was floored; excited, inspired, intrigued, hopeful, angry. My brother was diagnosed with Autism at the age of 2; however, I did not know him until he was 10. Reading this book, helped me to understand some of his journey and what families like his face in the beginning. In addition, it open my eyes to the new developments within the autism spectrum community.

From that point on, I was on fire. I was reading 2-4 books at a time. I was drunk with knowledge. I had so much going through my head I didn't know what to do with it all, so I stopped. I organized what I knew into a document that flowed from idea to idea, how things were linked, and what I needed to know more of. This is where this part of the story comes to an end...Simply stated, these ideas and statements are not supported in his life.

So now what...I decided to take a step back and look at all the information that I had gathered and thought "If it's not a good idea for him to eat it, then why should I?" From then on out, I took small steps to making my diet and lifestyle more pure. First I started with no high fructose corn syrup, dyes, artificial flavorings, and sweeteners. Next, I cut out dairy and gluten in small steps. After the 2011 new year, I was reading all the diet articles and came across one about sugar intake, so I decided to limited sugar as well. ALL SUGAR, yes even fruit.

To sum all this up and get to my point my outlook on all this is...I want to help the general public make better eating choices. When I made these decisions for myself it was a lot of trial and error, finding out what brands to buy and what recipes to try. And for example, where you can eliminate dairy or when you should just leave it alone and only eat that item on special occasions (i.e. mac n cheese) ...or just when your best friend says it ok....
In this blog I want to share my journey, give honest reviews about things I've tried and/or use on a regular basis now, and continue to research. From this experience I hope I can learn more from people who are making the same changes, whether they're just learning or have done this for a long time now.

"Working together, ordinary people can perform extraordinary feats. They can push things that come into their hands a little higher up, a little further on towards the heights of excellence."

Thanks for reading!
